The German Government has extended a grant of Euro 11 million to set up a Technical Training Institute in Matara. A 10-acre plot has been allocated in Bopitiya, Matara, for the project, with construction to commence this year. A notable feature of the proposed project will be that, there will be German instructors and teachers for the project.

The project was initiated by Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who had initially discussed the project when he was the Foreign Minister in 2015, with the German Government. On a similar request, another TTI was set up in Kilinochchi in 2016, with German assistance. The TTI will help the Sri Lanka Government to widen the scope for Technical education for those who fail to enter university.

The German Technical College from where tens of thousands of students have passed out, was set up in 1958, under an agreement signed between Germany and Sri Lanka. - DW
