Celebrating the International Women’s Day this year, a collection of acclaimed national and international movies are now being screened at the National Film Corporation theatre and several foreign cultural institutions in Colombo.

Sumithra Peries

The Colombo International Women’s Film Festival (CIWFF), officially started on February 28, will run till March 7. On the final day country’s most experienced female filmmaker Sumithra Peries who has immensely contributed to country’s cinema will be awarded with the first ever Lifetime Achievement award of CIWFF.

The films will be shown daily at 3.30pm, 6.15pm and 9.00pm.

On March 3, at 3.30 pm short film ‘Tradition’ by Lanka Bandaranayaka and renowned Indian filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s newest film ‘Anatomy of Violence’ will be screened at the NFC cinema. The film screening will be followed by a discussion on violence against women. At 6.15 short film ‘Bless this Home’ by Randi Pavithra Kaluarachchi and German film ‘24 Weeks’ by Anne Zohra Berrached will be screened at the NFC.

At the Goethe-Institut, Colombo, at 9 pm ‘Maid for sale’, a documentary film by Dima al -joundi (Lebonan) followed by ‘4th of February’, a Sri Lankan documentary by Nadya Perera will be screened.

Dr. Sumathy Sivamohan

The screening on March 4 will be opened with Anomaa Rajakaruna’s ‘Reconciling Sri Lanka’ and Fathima Shanaz’s documentary ‘Halal’ (Sri Lanka) will be screened at 3.30 pm at the Goethe-Institut. At 6.15 pm short  film ‘Kali’s Daughter’ by Shashini Gamage and French film  ‘Camille redouble ’ by Noémie Lvovsky will be screened at NFC cinema. At 9 pm, short film ‘Like ekak damuda?’ by Ajantha Wijewardhana and ‘I Dont Feel at home on Internet any more’ by Anam Abbas (Pakistan) will be screened at the Goethe-Institut, Colombo.

On March 5, Brazilian short film ‘Alice’s Song’ by Bárbara Cariry and ‘Bokul’ by Reema Borah (India) will be screened at 3.30 pm at the Goethe-Institut, Colombo and at 6.15 pm short film ‘Love vs love’ by Pavithra Damunugahakumbura and the British film

‘Mary Shelley’ by Haifaa Al-Mansour will be screened at the NFC cinema. At 9 pm three Sri Lankan short films  ‘The Life I Used to live’ by Fayaz Mahroof,

Lanka Bandaranayaka

‘Waves Interrupted’ by Dimon John and ‘Wind Through the holes’ by Roshan Edward will be screened at the Goethe-Institut, Colombo.

On March 6, American blockbuster movie ‘Super Woman’ will be screened at 3.30 pm at the American Center, Colombo and at 6.30 pm short film ‘My Favourite Colour is blue’ by Niranjala Kumarasinghe and Sumathy Sivamohan’s

‘Sons and Fathers’ will be screened. At 9 pm Nadeeka Bandara’s ‘Red Shoes’ will be screened at the Goethe-Institut, Colombo.

On the final day March 7, French film ‘Jacquot de Nantes’ by Agnès Varda will be screened at 3.30 pm at Alliance FranÇaise de Kotte and Sumitra Peries’s latest film ‘Vaishnavee’ will be screened at NFC cinema as the closing film of the festival.
