For the first time, the General Information Technology paper for the G.C.E (O/L) examination will be held online, instead of as the usual written paper test. Examinations Commissioner General Sanath Pujitha told the Education Times that they had tested the process for nearly two years before deciding to conduct the exam online from this year onwards Accordingly, arrangements will be made to provide computers and internet facilities to students sitting the GIT paper.

Mr. Pujitha said students would be able to open the question paper online and if they were to face any technical glitch or power failure, the question paper would also be sent in pen drives to the examination centres. He said the Examinations Department had uploaded two trial papers online and GIT students could download them through the relevant app and try them out.

The students would also be given an opportunity to go to the examination centre a week before the exam to try out the trial online question paper. He said 650 centres and 150 standby centres were being readied islandwide to hold the GIT examination in the first week of January.
“As this was a written paper earlier, their were practical issues in testing the IT knowledge of the students. We believe that the new method will be useful to test the actual knowledge,” he said.

He said service providers had been requested to ensure a secure network during the period of the examination.
