Tidal waves disrupt traffic on Galle Road; no link with tsunami

View(s):

Tidal waves interrupted traffic movements on the Galle Road between Kalutara and Hambantota yesterday, but it had no link to the tsunami experienced in Indonesia, a spokesman for the Meteorological Department said.

The tidal waves also brought sand to the main road slowing down traffic movements and created panic among the public. The Met Department also warned that sea areas would be fairly rough off the coast extending from Panadura to Hambantota via Galle and there may be surges.

The Department and the Disaster Management Centre said that no tsunami warning was required as the Indonesian condition did not affect Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the Met Department said that particularly in the North-Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, the prevailing showery condition was expected to continue during the next few days.

Heavy rain falls of about 100mm can be expected at some places in these provinces. The Department said showers or thundershowers could occur at several places in the Western, Southern and North-Western coastal areas in the morning, too.
