The Sri Lanka Medical Council will request the SAITM graduate who petitioned the Supreme Court and obtained relief to submit a document-supported application for the review of her registration as a medical practitioner.

The request will be made through the student’s lawyer and it follows the Supreme Court verdict ordering the SLMC to grant the student provisional registration.
“The rest of the SAITM graduate students can also submit their applications for provisional registration,” SLMC vice president Nilanthi de Silva said.
Meanwhile, the Government said it stood by its decision to shut down SAITM.

“We shut down the institute, taking into consideration the long-term welfare of students and the Sri Lankan public, said Higher Education MinisterWijeyadasa Rajapakshe. “We allowed for a possible Supreme Court ruling in favour of the SAITM graduate, but decided to go ahead with the closure because of SAITM’s substandard education and we felt it was detrimental to society.

“The Supreme Court has gone clearly on the basis of the law regarding the particular graduate student who filed a petition demanding her degree to be recognised by the SLMC,” the Minister said.
