Police take custody of ‘Vijayans Trophy’

Led by Chathuranga Dinesh SL Police SC walked away with the coveted ‘Vijayans Trophy’ and a cash prize of Rs. 50000/= when they out played Kothalawala Defence University by 2 – 1 in the men’s final at the 19th Vijayans trophy all island inter club hockey sevens 2018 for men and women concluded at Edward Park hockey ground in Matale.

The two day tournament conducted by old Vijayans sports club Matale together with Matale Vijaya College PPA saw 25 mens club teams taking part in the men’s cup championship.

At the short whistle, the score stood one all (1- 1) with Sampath Bandaranayake netting a
goal for Kothalawala Defence University and S. Priyalanka claiming one for Police SC.

After the changes of ends shortly before the long whistle Thilina Perera broke the deadlock when he made his way through K.D.U Defence to slam in the winning goal to seal victory for Police at
2 – 1.

Best player of the men’s segment was Sandaruwan Priyalanka of Police SC while Maduranga Herath of Kotalawa Defence University was named the  best goal keeper.

Indika Jayawardhane and D.R.P. Dissanayake controlled the final.
