Darsha tops the medals list

In the history of the Asian Games, Sri Lanka has won 45 medals, from the 1951 Delhi Games to the 2014 Incheon Games. These include 10 Gold, 11 Silver and 24 Bronze.

The first medal was won in athletics when M.A. Akbar won Silver in the Pole Vault at the first Asian Games in Delhi in 1951.

Golds medals (10): Nagalingam Ediriweerasingham (in 1958 Tokyo Games — High Jump), S.L.B. Rosa (1970 Bangkok Games), W. Wimaladasa 400m (1974 Teheran Games) and 400 relay (W. Wimaladasa, A. Premachandra, Kosala Sahabandu and Sunil Gunawardena 1974 Teheran). Sugath Tillekeratne 400 (1998 Bangkok)  Damayanthi Darsha (2 Gold, 200 Metres and 400 Metres 1998 Bangkok Games) and Susanthika Jayasinghe (100 Metres) and Damayanthi Dharsha (400 Metres. 2002 Busan Games).

Our last medal won by Sri Lanka was in 2006 at the Doha Games. In the 2014 Incheon — South Korea and 2010 Guangzhou – China, Sri Lanka were unable to win a single medal.  Prior to that they also failed to win medals at the 1982 Delhi Games and1986 Seoul Games.

The Sri Lanka Asian Games full contingent of 259 including 177 athletes., 67 officials four doctors and top officials. Sri Lanka’s Chef De Mission is Chief of Staff, Sri Lanka Army Dampath Fernando and Deputy Chef De Mission is Gamini Jayasinghe. The Sri Lanka team leader has not been appointed up to Friday. The Sri Lanka teams will leave in groups to Jakarta from August 15. The Games will be from August 18 Sepotember2.

The largest contingent for the Asian Games this year is from China, other than the host country, which is 871. Amongst the South Asian countries India is sending 690 athletes.
