Nostalgic was the atmosphere at SLECC as Boney M performed their 70’s hits Live in Colombo featuring the group’s very own original lead singer Liz Mitchell and accompanied by a full live band on June 16, 2018. As good as the music was, the full house was there for just a little more than that. The performance was a journey back in time for those who grew up or grew old listening to Boney M.

Starting sharp at 7.30 PM, The iconic songs ‘Sunny’, ‘Painter Man’ and ‘Daddy Cool’ were followed by more of their hits for which the crowdtook to their feet dancing the night away. The audience joined to sing along as Mitchell and the band performed their favourite hits of Boney M from the old days. ‘Holiday’, ‘Brown Girl’, ‘Bahama Mama’, ‘Rasputin’ and ‘Rivers of Babylon’ held a special place among them. With the kind of music that everyone could enjoy, Boney M was a treat for every member in the audience from children and young people to their parents and grandparents who were all energetic and excited. Tony Ashcroft, the dancer and male vocalist paid homage to the band’s original dancer and male vocalist Bobby Farrell while retaining his own unique style of dance. Mitchell with Boney M performed ‘No Woman No Cry’ in her selection from Bob Marley and Beatles’ ‘Let it be’ from her Liz Mitchell album. The group happily gave in to requests that came from the massive audience and performed ‘Mandela’ and ‘Malaika’.

The highlight of the night was when the audience was invited to come on stage to join the band in dancing for the iconic ‘Gotta go home’. This was followed by many warm embraces and selfies with the legend Liz Mitchell and Boney M. Mitchell performed ‘Somewhere in the world’ and hoped that the song resonated with thoe in the island.

After two hours of positive energy, connection and absolute excitement, Boney M and Liz Mitchell bade farewell to their fans from Colombo. Boney M Live in Sri Lanka was a venture by Avant Premiere in association with Commercial Bank.
