Big organisations are most vulnerable to cyberattacks

There isn’t a single umbrella solution to protect businesses against hackers from launching attacks to extract data from their computers, according to Head of Asia Pacific Cloudflare, Singapore, Ms. Aliza Knox.

Making a presentation on “Emerging Trends in the Cyber –Security Landscape” at the Shangri La Hotel in Colombo recently at an event organised by Eureka Technology Partners (Pvt) Ltd in partnership with Cloudflare Inc of Singapore, she spoke at length on the emerging trends in the landscape of cyber security.

Ms. Knox said that Cloudflare that began operations in 2010 is backed by Microsoft and Google and a number of other players. “We have three engineering hubs in London, San Francisco and in Singapore that provides a 24 hour service. We have helped Sri Lanka Telecom last year to upgrade its cyber security network.”

Ms. Knox said that Cloudfare is in a position to help corporate bodies in Sri Lanka to thwart cyber security threats by choosing appropriate technology solutions. “We are an edged security provider, the boundary where the customer and the business meet on the Internet. Sri Lanka does not have full Internet penetration as yet and we are working on that.”

She said cyberattacks have become more frequent as a result of people and companies using more Apps on the computers and also because hackers have become more sophisticated. “It has also become a big business in some countries to hack into computers to steal data and money. Hackers also demand ransom money to return stolen data, which has become an organised crime and we all are vulnerable to such attacks. It has also become a serious issue to sustain such attacks and no company is big enough to prevent such attacks,” she said.

Chief Information Security Officer Sulaiman Razmik of EurekaTechnological Partners in Sri Lanka said that cyber security was a growing concern during the past few years and now it is growing in an unpredictable manner.

He said hackers have devised new methods of hacking into computers to extract valuable data. Although cyber security was a buzz word people are now paying much attention to it globally. “People and organisations have realised the security threat it poses and as a result vendors have joined the bandwagon of finding new solutions to the cyber security threat.” However due to the availability of a plethora of new applications in the market, people and organisations are confused as to what product they should choose.
