SLC’s Elections Committee set up

Sri Lanka Cricket yesterday appointed a five-member Election Committee as per Sports Regulations to conduct its Annual General Meeting scheduled for May 31.

The names of Rasika Weeratunga, Buddika Illanganath, Jude Perera, Devagiri Bandara and Sarath Utpala had received the unanimous consent of the membership at the Extraordinary General Meeting(EGM) held on Saturday.

Sri Lanka Cricket had earlier planned to hold their Annual General Meeting on May 19, but had to postpone on the advise of the Attorney Generals Department who deemed that the SLC has violated Sports Regulations in appointing the Election Committee.

According to these rules, all National Sports Associations (NSAs) should “hold a Special General Meeting to elect the members for the Elections Committee”. However, SLC formed a five-member committee through its Executive Committee without a mandate from the general membership to do so.

Incumbent administration led by parliamentarian Thilanga Sumathipala is all set to secure a second term unless a blind-side move knocks-down Sumathipala.

“We are very comfortable of getting elected unopposed,” Sumathipala said at a press conference held soon after the EGM yesterday.
