The Ministry of Education (MoE) will purchase and supply Laptops to students, instead of having the Private sector provide the machines on lease. The move comes after issues over the call for tenders from the Private sector to provide Laptops on lease, and be responsible for its maintenance.

An MoE official said that Rs 5 billion will be spent by the MoE to purchase the Laptops and distribute them among the students.
Under the earlier plan, the Private sector supplier was to be responsible for the Laptops’ maintenance and repairs, while the MoE only distributed them.

The MoE said it was cheaper for it to undertake the project, as it will have ownership of the machines, at the end of the project.
He said they would be purchasing the Laptops under a 3-year guarantee and the total project cost was estimated at Rs 12 billion, with which they could purchase around 160,000 Laptops, while repairs and maintenance are estimated at Rs 400 million. - DW
