The Ministry of Education (MoE) is to introduce a backup system to fill short term vacancies and ensure school education is not interrupted due to lack of teachers.
The move by the MoE comes in the wake of fresh reports of more than 10,000 short term vacancies for a range of reasons including maternity leave, retirement, overseas travel, for training as well private purposes. Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told Education Times that the backup will be made up of newly recruited teachers, excess teachers in schools and selected teachers.

National Schools (Teacher Transfers) Director P.I.N. Ilapperuma said the backup system will be mainly to provide teachers for the main subjects including Maths, Science, English, Sinhala and Social studies. He said they hope to have a backup of at least 10,000 teachers, according to requirements.

Principals will be required to send details in advance, of the number of teacher vacancies that may arise due to long leave of staff. - DW
