CCC and Piliyandala VCA share Under-12 Academy Championship

The second annual Under-12 Cricket Tournament, organised and conducted by CCC School of Cricket among premier cricket academies saw the final match between the defending champions, CCC School of Cricket ‘Maroons’ and Piliyandala Vision C.A. played at Army Sappers ground in Mattegoda being abandoned due to bad light, followed by heavy rain. The two contenders were thus, declared joint champions of the tournament.

In the Losers’ Final, played in the morning, Nondescript School of Cricket got the better of Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Foundation by close 11 runs victory to win the third place.

The honoured Chief Guest at the awards presentation was the former Royalist cricketer and Head Coach of Nondescript School of Cricket, Dilip Somaratne, who also coached Royal College and St. Peters’ College with distinction. In his address Dilip Somaratne appealed to the young cricketers to be disciplined, dedicated and be hardworking to achieve their individual and team goals. He also stressed the importance of team work in cricket and adviced the budding cricketers present to work as a team always if they want to be winners.

All participating teams received a valid certificate of participation while the third place winners received the Bronze medals and the joint winners — CCC and Piliyandala C.A. shared the Gold medals.

Renowned junior cricket coach, Nelson Mendis, the Director of CCC School of Cricket made the welcome speech while skipper of the CCC ‘Maroons’ team, Sharu Shanmuganathan proposed the vote of thanks.

A large crowd of parents, students and well-wishers of all participating teams were present in spite of the bad weather condition.

  •  Best Bowler: Kyle Makalanda (Nondescript School of Cricket) – 12 wickets 
  •  Best Batsman: Sasanka Ranaweera (Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Foundation) – 221 runs; Ave. 55.2 
  •  Player of the Tournament: Sharu Shanmuganathan (CCC School of Cricket) – Batting: 425 runs; Average 141.2; Wicket-keeper – 11 victims; Captain of the Winning Team
