Politicians dish the ban on use of polythene

President Maithripala Sirisena instructed the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to ban the use of polythene during the up-coming election campaign, as well as to strictly enforce laws against people who violate the ban on use of polythene.

However despite concerns being raised over the use of polythene during the run-up to the election, the ‘Sunday Times’ found many instances where politicians and their supporters had no qualms about using polythene as propaganda material.

President Sirisena, at a meeting held on Thursday, discussed the current status of implementing the cabinet decision regarding the management of using polythene and plastic.

Environmental groups too have voiced concerns that the election campaign would result in the use of polythene at a time when the government has banned its use.
