Officers in state-owned units receive professional allowance

Senior officers in certain sectors of the Government are to receive a professional allowance of between Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month, apart from their monthly wage and other benefits, with effect from October 2017.

According to an October 25 circular by Treasury Secretary R.H.S. Samaratunga to Ministry Secretaries and heads of departments, the allowance was approved by the Cabinet some months ago.

Accordingly officers with less than six years’ service will get Rs. 3,000; for less than 11 years’ service – Rs. 5,000; for up to 19 years – Rs. 10,000 and for 19 years’ service and over – Rs.15,000. These payments apply to senior officers of state corporations, statutory bodies and state-owned companies. The circular said the allowance is entitled only to officers “who are not receiving any other allowances other that language proficiency allowance, transport allowance, risk allowances, telephone allowance and the adjustment allowance and cost of living allowance
