Maris Stella and A. Rathnayake MMV lead on day four
Maris Stella College Negombo and A. Rathnayake MMV were in the lead in boys’ and girls’ category respectively at the end of day four of the All Island School Games Athletics Championships at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama yesterday.
Maris Stella College Negombo were in the lead with 81 points. St. Benedict’s College Kotahena (75 points) and A. Ratnayake MMV Walalla (68 points) in the boys senior championships.
In the girls’ senior championships A. Rathnayake MMV had collected 146 points. Gateway College Rajagiriya (57) and Sumana Balika MV Ratnapura (53) were in second and third places respectively.
In the Junior Athletics Championships Sir John Kotalawela MV Kurunegala and Ave Maria Convent Negombo were leading the boys’ and girls’ points.
Leading the Overall Championships is Western Province (949 points), followed by Central Province (401 points). North Western Province were in third spot with 308 points.
Emerging athlete Sadeepa Henderson of Gateway College Rajagiriya has done well in the under 16 girls’ long jump, 100 metres and 200 metres having won gold medal hat-trick.
Once again due to heavy rain, the meet was interrupted on several occasions and the athletes could not display their best performances due to wet ground conditions. Nevertheless the performances of the school athletes are noteworthy.
Today is the last day of the event.
