Trinity College Principal Andrew Fowler Watt in a statement explained the incident, quoting students who were taking part in the training exercise.

The team members of the rugby team had explained that they started their morning running from Trinity Collage to Pallekelle during the day which the incident took place.

He added that none of them carried heavy objects during the run.

As the team-mates explained Bhathiya was among the frontline runners and was not carrying weights when they were close to the Temple of the Tooth. Further they explained that that he did not display fatigue even when others did.

Afterwards Bhathiya had expressed signs of fatigue near the Tennakumbura bridge. Yet he ran un-assisted and even won the down hill sprint (50 metres) and fifteen minutes afterwards had mentioned he felt faintish.

According to the statement the team mates had said that Bhathiya seemed very fit that day and did not show any signs of fatigue initially.

The statement further said that everything possible was done for Bhathiya by the boys and the staff from the moment the boy was taken ill to the moment he arrived at the hospital.
