The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) will be meeting the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Health Ministry Secretary next week for further discussions.

GMOA Secretary Dr Haritha Aluthge told the Sunday Times they have received an appointment to meet the PSC to discuss matters regarding the Post-Internship Appointments list.

The GMOA expressed its objection towards the Post-Internship Appointments due to its illegality.

They claimed the list only has the signature of the Director of Medical Services Prof. Priyantha Athapaththu and secondly, the list which has to be shared via the official website of the Health Ministry, has been published on social media.

“The Govt has to investigate the illegal matters cropping up in the Medical field,” he said.

Meanwhile, the GMOA opposed the appointment of Prof Colvin Gunarathne as the new Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). Dr Aluthge claims the appointment is political and clearly goes against the wishes of the President and the Prime Minister.

“Both the President and the Prime Minister wanted the appointee to be an acceptable one and, in fact, the Prime Minister had rejected Prof Gunarathne’s name because he was once on the National List,” he said.

The GMOA stated that Prof Gunaratne always had a pro-SAITM plan in mind during his years as an SLMC member. Dr Aluthge said they had written to the President and the Prime Minister regarding their concerns over Prof Gunarathne’s appointment and to investigate it.

The GMOA will decide on further trade union actions after next week’s discussions.
