‘Sri Lanka: Land Policy for Sustainable Development – to strengthen the struggle for survival’ by Prof. G.H. Peiris was recently released by Visidunu Prakashakayo. Priced at Rs. 1,290, the book is now available at leading booksellers and at the Colombo International Book Fair currently on at the BMICH.

The author, Professor Emeritus of the Peradeniya University earned his doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge. He has also undertaken research assignments for the ILO, the WHO, Encyclopedia Britannica and other prestigious organizations.

The book is based on the premise that land policy in Sri Lanka should extend beyond its conventional preoccupation with tenurial relations in agriculture, landlessnessness among the rural poor and conservation of forests; and while continuing to promote poverty alleviation and productivity enhancement in all segments of the economy. It encompass a wide range of concerns such as those pertaining to environmental degradation, the ramified impact of intensifying natural hazards and the changing needs and aspirations of the people, especially the youth – impelled mainly by their constant exposure to increasingly aggressive ethos of consumerism.
