Incessant sand mining along the banks of the Deduru Oya raises concern

Illegal sand mining along the banks of the Deduru Oya and on the fertile lands in Nindagama for the past three months is raising concern among residents.

Tractors are being used indiscriminately for mining and transpoprtation of sand and villagers say that these lands well known for cultivation since ancient times are being plundered by unscrupulous miners.

They charge that authorities are turning a blind eye. Residents fear that if the heavy mining continues the area would flood during the rainy season. Kurunegala Irrigation Director told the Sunday Times that no permits had been issued for mining in the area and action would be taken against the offenders.
