Geetha Kumarasinghe suffers burn injuries in household accident

Galle District MP Geetha Kumarasinghe was admitted to hospital with burn injuries yesterday after a gas leak at her home caused a fire.

Police said the Ms. Kumarasinghe was in the kitchen of her home in Welikada last morning when she had turned on the gas cooker. Initial investigations have found that the cylinder’s pipe was damaged and there had been a gas leak, resulting in an explosion and fire.

The MP, who was alone in the house at the time, suffered burn injuries to her body in the incident. She was taken to a private hospital in Narahenpita where she was still undergoing treatment.

Police had not been able to record a statement from the MP until last evening. Welikada Police are investigating.
