The Society of Teachers of Speech and Drama (STSD), United Kingdom (UK), awarded a prestigious Fellowship to the Founder Principal of the Varuni Jayasekara Academy of Speech, Drama and Communication, Varuni Jayasekara on June 8 at a ceremony held at the Janaki Hotel in Colombo 5.
The Fellowship was presented by STSD Council Member Penny Charteris to Ms. Jayasekara following a unanimous vote, as announced at the STSD Annual General Meeting in January. The Fellowship is awarded to members in appreciation of their valued service to further the aims and objectives of the STSD beyond their individual membership, through their work in theatre or the world of teaching of speech, drama and communication.

Ms. Jayasekara who has over 38 years of experience as a teacher of speech and drama and allied subjects, is also the Founder Principal of the Academy of English for Specific Purposes and Executive Director of the Colombo Academy of Language Skills and Dramatic Art.

The presentation of the Fellowship was preceded by an insightful discussion by STSD members on the challenges faced by teachers of speech and drama and an exchange of ideas and experiences on enriching the students’ experience. Teachers of speech and drama from across Sri Lanka gathered together to discuss best practices in the field and how to address the challenges encountered in teaching students with varied abilities and interests.
