Global footwear maker Bata, which has operated in Sri Lanka for the past 67 years, says it has been hugely successful in all countries where it operates, offering convenient shopping and a huge assortment for customer’s offline.

To reposition Bata as a top brand in Sri Lanka, more focus and attention will be paid to the development of ecommerce business, while retail business will continue with the brick and mortar stores. Wholesales and institutional sales will be additional verticals to bring quality footwear to the people, the company said in a media release.

Bata Shoe Company of Ceylon Ltd was incorporated on June 9, 1950 at Grandpass, Colombo in a small warehouse with 53 employees. Bata’s initial representation in Sri Lanka was only in the city of Colombo with retail operations commencing in 1951 from one outlet in Main Street, Colombo 2. In the same year, the manufacturing was shifted to Ratmalana, the present location.

“Bata has taken pride in being a footwear solution for a large assortment of quality products, competitive prices and a great shopping experience. The company announced that it is now set to enter Sri Lanka’s ecommerce market and engage customers through novel ideas, a wide range of footwear products, great prices and seamless services. Bata launched the online shopping website www.bata.lk on April 6,” the release said.

Dhanrakshan Shadagopan, Manager Multi- Channel for Bata Sri Lanka, said, “Bata will be a success story with the online market penetration in Sri Lanka which will allow us to offer unique value propositions such as a secure brand buying experience and free shipping offering to Sri Lankan customers. We are looking forward to raise the bar in terms of providing incredible online deals for the Sri Lankan ecommerce market”.
