The Sister of Charity first came to Sri Lanka from Belgium in 1896  and set up Sacred Heart Convent for Ggirls and many charitable causes such as the Van Reeth Home for Elders in Galle, homes for differently-abled children, orphans and elders in Ratnapura, Hikkaduwa, Nugegoda, Moratuwa and Kegalle.

“People may ask why the chapel and not these homes or the school,” Ferdinando points out. “But the chapel is the centre of what they do. The Sisters of Charity have sacrificed their lives for us, so this is the least we can do for them.”

Construction of the chapel was begun in 1920. Over the years, due to lack of funds, the chapel was not maintained at its best. It was only in 2015 that renovations were proposed, in light of the approaching 120th anniversary of the Sacred Heart Convent. Part of the renovation costs have aslready been covered by The Papal Fund, the Past Pupils’ Association of Sacred Heart Convent, and well-wishers. Further support has been given by past pupils’ associations of St. Aloysius’ College, Richmond College, Mahinda
