Automated digital cameras and cloud computing to nab traffic offenders

Automated digital cameras will soon replace outdated analog CCTV cameras in Colombo City and its suburbs to nab errant drivers.

Police CCTV Unit director T.P. Gamlath said the Traffic Police and the Megapolis Ministry were working together in a pilot project that will see cameras being installed at Kirulapone, Kollupitiya’s Pittala –Handiya and the Dematagoda Junction.

Pointing out that the CCTV cameras now in operation were over ten years old, ASP Gamlath said the new cameras would also be linked to ‘cloud computing’ which would enable efficient management of traffic.

Explaining that the new technology would make it easier to store and retrieve data on drivers, he said accidents and incidents of errant driving would immediately appear on a wide computer screen placed in the control room of the Police Traffic Department.

“We can observe these incidents from the control-room and charge sheet the offenders immediately,” he said. The charge sheets will either be manually written or automated. The automated charge sheets would be sent to the offenders’ mobile phones. The Traffic Police hopes to use the government Central Remote Server for this purpose.

However the ASP said that there were problems to be sorted out before the automated system became fully functional. He said that, for instance, the law required that the charge sheet be served on errant drivers, but the automated message would be sent to vehicle owners although they had not committed the offence.

To circumvent the situation it would be necessary to devise a system with the participation of all stakeholders, including the Motor Traffic Department, leasing companies and hiring agents.
