It was a Women’s Day event with a difference when the SAARC Cultural Centre in Sri Lanka marked the day on March 8 honouring pioneering women artistes who had made a significant contribution to Sri Lanka in their respective fields. Iranganie Serasinghe, Vajira Chitrasena, Nanda Malini, Sumitra Peiris and Mary Anne David were all felicitated in a simple but moving ceremony.

All-girl percussion troupe Thuuryaa also dazzled the packed house at the Lionel Wendt with some absorbing sounds.

The SAARC Cultural Centre is headed by Director Wasanthe  Kotuwella. Kishani Jayasinghe Wijayasekera, Deputy Director of Programmes at the SAARC Centre was Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening.
