Begin the New Year in a spirit of unity

View(s):

Unity is strength. But most families are unable to maintain unity. Some were even broken up or destroyed. No country where rice is the staple diet has run into a shortage of rice but this has happened in Sri Lanka largely because in rice producing areas, many young people prefer to go for other jobs instead of cultivation. So how can we talk of good governance when we cannot meet our daily need for a plate of rice?

Until we realise our own human frailties we cannot solve the problems of the country. Too many people consider themselves as experts. If so many could attain that status it is well and good. But most of us have our own frailties and we need the insight and inspiration from the Dhamma to realise this.

We need to acknowledge that today only a few people are sincerely practising the Dhamma. The Buddha’s teaching is that “the Dhamma protects everyone who practices it”. Even in other religions, it is the same. There is an old saying “coming colours no good”. Irreligious or unspiritual people have little or no care or feelings for others, as their understanding is not balanced. They make use of others for their own benefit. Some have come to the realization that wealth does not give us lasting happiness. If such people enlighten and educate others in the hallowed precept of simple living, we will have peace and unity in 2017.

It is the view of many that astrologically the New Year may not be very good not only for Sri Lanka but for the whole world. We need to forget past differences, become united and start the New Year 2017 in a spirit of true unity.

May all beings be healthy and happy. Let all be contented.
We wish you good health and success.
