Janakaraliya mobile theatre moves to Colombo

After a 12 year long journey around the country, ‘Janakaraliya’ Mobile Theatre  will return to Colombo and will be performed from November 7 to 12.

The Mobile Theatre will be installed near the Planetarium at Colombo University to enjoy a series of award winning Janakaraliya plays together with a number of guest performances.

The festival will start with  children’s play ‘Punchi Apata Den Therei’, produced by Somalatha Subasinghe – Play House Theatre, Kotte at 9.30 am and ‘Suranganak Bandu Puranganak’ a play based on Bertolt Brecht’s ‘Good Woman of Setzuvan” – directed by Ranga Manupriya and Damith Aluthgama at 6.30 pm on November 7.

‘Charandas’, Janakaraliya Production directed by Parakrama Niriella will be staged at 6.30 pm on Nov 8 and ‘Hunuwataye’ directed by Parakrama Niriella, another  Janakaraliya production will be at 6.30 pm on Nov 9.

Children’s play ‘Rathmalee’ produced by Somalatha Subasinghe Play House Theatre, Kotte will be staged at 9.30 am and at 6.30 pm ‘Boksiko Ghar’ (Witch’s House), a production by Mandala Theatre, Nepal on Nov 10.

On Nov 11 Children’s play ‘Thoppi Welenda’ directed by Somalatha Subasinghe will be at 9.30 am and      ‘Watoluvo Saha Uloluvo’ play based on                Bertolt Brecht’s “Round Heads and Pointed Heads” directed by Rasaiah Loganandan and Sumudu Mallawarachchi will be staged at 6.30 pm.  Prof.S.Maunaguru’s ‘Raavanesan’ will be staged at 6.30 pm on Nov 13.

‘Wenkatti Wattam’,  Tamil Translation of “Bertolt Brecht’s “Caucasian Chalk Circle” will be staged at 6.30 pm on Nov 15. The play is a translation by Dr. M.Shanmugalingam and is directed by Parakrama Niriella and K.Rathitharan.

‘Payanihal’  directed by Ronika Chamalee and Selvaraj Leelawathy and ‘Kalpanthaya’ by Nidahas Karaliya, Chilaw will be staged at  6.30 pm on Nov 16.

‘Andura saha Eliya’, ‘Parasthava’ and ‘Bhasha saha Molee’ directed by Ronika Chamalee, Selvaraj Leelawathy, Ajantha Shanthakumar and Nishantha Kularatne will be staged at 6.30 pm on Nov 17.

‘Sekkuwa’ directed by Parakrama Niriella will be staged at   6.30 pm on Nov 18.

On Saturday Nov 19 a collection of short plays produced by the   University of Colombo and ‘Seethambarapata’ and ‘Andaramal’ directed by Parakrama Niriella will be staged 6.30 pm.

‘Hunuwataya’ directed by Parakrama Niriella will again be staged at  6.30 pm on Nov. 20 and on the final day Nov 21, the programme will be ended with Parakrama Niriella’s play ‘Charandas’ at  6.30 pm.

With the aim of promoting children’s aesthetic interest Children’s Workshop Creative Encounters presented by Kaushalya Fernandu and Chandana Aluthge will be held on November 8, 9 and 12 starting at 9.30 am.

Janakaraliya will also focus on music with ‘Music Matters’ a programme presented by Baliphonics and Transcoastal Collective at 6.30 pm on November 12.
