MEGA Maldives Airlines, despite stringent staff cuts to battle lower loads, has announced new services between Male and Colombo.

The Male-based airline said it will link the two tourism destinations initially with three flights per week.

The move comes after lower arrivals from China, the Maldives’ biggest source market, forced the airline to announce a suspension of new routes and shed jobs. The first flight to Colombo is on Thursday, November 3. MEGA Maldives is scheduled flights to operate on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Return fares to Colombo will start from US$165. One-way fares may be as low asĀ  $70-95 depending on direction of travel. Explaining its strategy, the airline said it was developing plans for a number of other destinations in the region as well. Its seasonal services between Male and Malaysia and also with Saudi Arabia will resume on November 15 with four frequencies to Kuala Lumpur and three frequencies to Jeddah. New services will include flights to Medina, once a week and will complement the Jeddah operation.
