Helpage provides aid to over 2000 elders

HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL)  last week provided over 2000 food and non-food items to elders affected by the recent floods and landslide and their families in Colombo and  Kegalle Districts.

The distribution  programme was carried out in consultation with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), the area Divisional Secretariats and Grama Niladaris. and was funded by HelpAge International of the United Kingdom.

During the first stage HelpAge Sri Lanka relief team distributed cooked food packets and varieties of medicine and non food items to the areas of Kelaniya, Nagahamula, Pattiwila, Kotikawatta, IDH and Kolonnawa in Colombo District.

During the second stage,  flood and landslide affected families in Pahala Talduwa, Kelagama, Diagala, Epalapitiya, Napawala, Uduwila in Dehiowita Divisional Secretariat Division and Uduwa and Thanimalei camps in Bulathkohupitiya,  Mahanthegama and Dunugammaliadda camps in Mawanella Divisional Secretariat Division received dry ration bags with rice, dhal, sugar, tea leaves, canned fish etc.

They also  received  non  food item parcels of clothes, readymade garments, sanitary items, soap, tooth paste and also drinking water bottles.

HASL, Programme Manager Chanminda de Silva said HelpAge is planning to implement several other programmes in future to support the elders and their families.
