Closed-circuit TV recordings obtained from a shop helped detectives to track down a three-wheeler driver responsible for the death of a pedestrian, it was revealed during a coroner’s court inquiry.

The footage showed the man was thrown to the side of the road when a speeding three-wheeler struck him down at 9.30 p.m. in Mulleriyawa town on Monday. The injured man was lying on the ground unnoticed by passers by for nearly two hours until the driver of an ambulance that was carrying a patient saw him and took him to the National Hospital.

However, he died soon after he was admitted to the hospital. Police who later visited the scene obtained the footage of a camera fitted to a nearby shop. Soon they tracked down the three-wheeler driver and arrested him.

Coroner Ashroff Rumi ordered the Police to produce the driver in court on June 27. Colombo’s Judicial Medical Officer Dr. N.A.D. Mendis confirmed that the death was due to critical injuries to the backbone.
Investigations were carried out by the Mulleraiyawa Police.
