The very first edition of the ‘Italian Week in Sri Lanka’ will take place in Colombo from May 28 to June 5 within the framework of the Italian National day celebrations. The Italian National Day on June 2 commemorates the day, back in 1946, when the Italian people chose through a popular referendum for their country to become a Republic.

This year, as part of the festivities, the Embassy of Italy in Sri Lanka will be hosting a number of cultural fringe events under the umbrella of ‘Italian Week in Sri Lanka’. Italian Week will kick off at 6 p.m. on May 28 with a free screening of one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed Italian films in recent times, the Oscar-winning ‘La Grande Bellezza’ (The Great Beauty). The film will be screened at the National Film Corporation, 303, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Day Two of the Italian Week programme on May 30 will see the exhibition ‘Migration Stories: Here & There’, a collaborative effort by the Academy of Design Colombo (AOD) and the Embassy of Italy. The theme ‘Here & There’ focuses on Sri Lankan migrants in Italy, as well as Italian migrants in Sri Lanka, exploring architecture, culture (food & music) and design through their personal stories, cuisine and fusion food presented as photo essays, mixed media and videos. Migration Stories will be on display until June 13th at AOD, 29 Lauries Road, Colombo 5.

Moving to music, the Italian Embassy will proudly present the very talented guitarist, Marco Vinicio Carnicelli, and promising pianist Carmine Chiarelli in concert at 7 p.m. on May 31 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium, Colombo 7.

Italian Week would not be complete without food and wine! A ‘Taste of Italy” is an opportunity to enjoy and explore Italian culture through food and wine! In addition, the Italian Embassy, together with P.S.T., will bring down a famous chef who will prepare Italian delicacies at Park Street Trattoria throughout the week.

Italian Week is the initiative of the Italian Ambassador, Paolo Andrea Bartorelli, who envisaged this innovative way to mark his first Italian National Day in Sri Lanka:  “‘Italian Week in Sri Lanka’ is open to everyone, free of charge, and I am very much looking forward to receiving you to all our events!”
