Train services on the Colombo – Badulla Main Line resumed yesterday (Saturday) after railway engineers carried out a repair on the line with difficulty following an earth slip close to Ihalakotte railway station on the Kadugannawa incline.

The repair was effected on a length of more than 300 metres which was on a steep incline and was carried out in difficult terrain, according to a railwayman involved in the operation.

He said the repair was carried out five hundred metres from Ihalakotte station with water seeping on to the track causing the damage.

However rail services in the newly repaired section will be restricted only to trains in daylight hours while trains will not operate in the night until further inspections are carried out.

The Railways Deputy Superintendent (Operations) Vajira Saman Polwattege said trains operated only from Colombo to Rambukkana and from Kandy to Badulla on the Main Line.

He said railway workers were able to clear trees and rubble in areas affected by floods and landslides but were not able to repair the damage caused at Ihalakotte for a few days.

Mr. Polwattage said the railway authorities had decided not to run trains last Thursday and Friday in the affected section.
