Hardcore criminals nabbed by Mirihana Police Sp.Op.Unit

Three persons involved in two robberies amounting to over Rs 130 million and a string of other criminal activities were arrested by the Special Operations Unit of the Mirihana police, a senior police officer said yesterday.

The suspects were initially taken in over a murder investigation where a person was shot dead in the Welikada police area.
The suspects are residents of Tangalle, Battaramulla and Malabe.

They were allegedly involved in the murder of six persons in the Angunukolapelessa area in 1997, robbery of gold valued at over Rs 30.5 million from a jewellery shop in Wellawatta, and the robbery of over Rs 100 million in gold jewellery from the Bank of Ceylon branch in Hali Ela. They were in possession of a 9mm pistol.

In a separate raid by the same police unit, three other suspects involved in a series of housebreaks were arrested in Weharahera, Piliyandala, Police said yesterday.

They were involved in robberies in Mirihana, Piliyandala, Mt Lavinia and Boralesgamuwa, where they had robbed gold jewellery, two cameras and a laptop.
