Sri Lankan youth team felicitated for excellent performance at Scrabble Championship

The Sri Lanka Scrabble League hosted a ceremony on February 28 at the Organisation of Professional Associations (OPA) of Sri Lanka to felicitate the Sri Lanka Youth Team for their excellent performance at the World Youth Scrabble Championship held in Perth, Australia in late 2015.

The 10th World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) the world premier tournament for youth, organized by the World English-Language Scrabble Players’ Association (WESPA), the world governing body for scrabble saw 106 players from 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Singapore, Pakistan, India, Malaysia taking part.

The Sri Lankan youth team emerged the Best Team for the first time, beating stiff competition from New Zealand and Pakistan, as they managed to secure three places in the top 10.  The 10-member Sri Lankan team comprised Migara Jayasinghe, Aabid Ismail, Janul De Silva, Vignesh Pirapaharan, Thavalakshman Yoganathan, Janidhu Karunaratne, Hasindu Arumapperuma, Radinka Dissanayake, Thirandi De Silva and Lambhotharan Yogananthan.

In addition to winning the trophy for the best team, Sri Lankan youth managed to win six more trophies, as follows:

Overall Fourth Place                       – Janul De Silva  (Royal College)

Overall Sixth Place                           – Thirandi De Silva (Ladies College)

Overall Eighth Place                        – Lambhotharan Yogananthan (Lyceum International School – Wattala)

Best Player – Under 14                   – Janul De Silva (Royal College)

Highest Game Score (of 693)      – Migara Jayasinghe (Lyceum International School – Wattala)

Best Player – Under 14   (Runner-up)       -Vignesh Pirapaharan (St. Thomas – Mt. Lavinia)
