It had been a hectic week of fashion, food and more fashion. The much awaited final day of HSBC CFW Spring-Summer 2017 hit the ramps on Friday, February 26. Starting the final evening’s show was a guest designer from the runways of Milan, the sought after Gaetano Navarra.

Presenting his glitzy anniversary collection, just after its appearance on the Milan ramps a few weeks ago, Gaetano who has just completed 20 years showing at Milan Fashion Week presented crop tops and slightly flared pants hinting that perhaps the 80’s are making a come-back in the global fashion scene.

Next up was Ramona Oshini with an intoxicatingly feminine collection. Ramona has long established a name for her brand as one that embraces the feminine form in a celebration of silhouettes. Sarees shimmered onto the runway echoing the vintage drapes of Sri Lanka’s cinema industry of yesteryear in familiar local prints.

Anika Fernando’s label, MAUS as expected incorporated care-free, comfortable looking mono-toned pieces. We found her waist- band free, over-sized version of the currently trending jumpsuit refreshing.

In contrast, Dimuthu Sahabandu’s models floated on to the ramp in intricate evening wear in glam-heavy ensembles. Accompanied by his signature use of Lana Del Ray’s haunting vocals, his collection resonated with the elaborate pre-Renaissance architecture of Italy.

There were some self-coloured lacy numbers in designer Upeksha Hager’s work. Consistently wowing us with her pieces, she managed to slip-in her signature sprig of flowers in the interestingly shaped creations. Boat-necks, short hems and flared long sleeves harked back to the arrival of the revolutionary 70’s.

Closing the HSBC CFW spectacle for Spring-Summer 2017 was Pakistani design guru, Rizwan Beyg. Drawing elements from the history of fashion, his collection paid homage to the fast-changing face of the industry. His innovative take on the 20’s flapper fashion- with a distinctly local touch of embroidered work was impressive.

And so the curtain fell on HSBC CFW’s first showing for 2016.
