One of the main concerns of the fishermen in Trincomalee has been that the government may prevent fishermen going out to sea from certain areas, as they want to develop the tourist industry there.

H.W. Sunil, a resident of Trincomalee engaged in fishing said though the original proposal had been drawn up by the previous government, they have yet to get a clear assurance from the new government that the project has been called off.

“It would be a grave injustice to the fishermen if they place restrictions on them going out to sea from certain areas, in order to encourage tourism,” he said.

Mr. Sunil said they have been trying to get a firm assurance from the officials, but to date they have not got any.
