Crowds flock to the Sarvodaya Finance Ltd. after news spread that the manager had been found dead

Police are investigating the death of 33-year-old Sulakshana Rajendran who took over as manager of the Kalmunai branch of the Sarvodaya Development Finance Ltd. around one-and-a half months ago.

The victim, an employee of the Sarvodaya financial unit for the past 12 years and a mother of a seven-year-old, was found dead in a pool of blood by her co-workers at her office on February 27. Ms Sulochana took over as manager after the past manager had obtained a transfer.

According to a statement made to the police by her father Rama Krishnan his daughter had told him that she had stumbled on a series of financial frauds committed by her predecessor and was meeting resistance from her own staff regarding the investigation.

According to reports, Sulakshana’s husband Dileepan had dropped her off at the financial institution on his way to the tailor shop he owned on that fatefulday.

That afternoon, an employee of the institution had called the father and told him to come urgently as there was a matter involving his daughter. He and his son-in-law Dileepan, had gone to the location and found Sulakshana dead in a pool of blood.

On learning that the police had not been informed, Rama Krishnan said he promptly informed the Kalmunai police and a team of officers led by Kalmunai ASP Hemantha Dikkowita and OIC of Kalmunai Police D.W. Gaffar had arrived at the scene and started investigations.

The investigators discovered a broken finger nail at the scene of the crime. As none of the victim’s nails were broken, police suspected it could be from the suspected killer.

They also discovered a bag, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet on the victim’s desk, which they showed the victim’s husband Dileepan and asked him to identify as to whether they belonged to his wife.

Dileepan had said that the helmet did not belong to his wife. Under interrogation a member of the staff recognised it as belonging to the institution’s former manager.

The former manager was brought to the crime scene where he was questioned regarding how his helmet came to be at the scene.

The former manager had also made many contradictory statements. It was also noticed that the sarong he was wearing was blood-stained.

Police took the man into custody when they discovered that the finger nail of his right hand was missing. Investigations are continuing as police believe the suspect may not have acted alone and he may have had help from others.
