On February 7 the grounds of Galle Face Hotel were transformed into a cool and fun music venue, when Mainstage Events hosted the first ever Colombo Jazz and Blues Festival. Tickets sold out and the amazingly picturesque, ocean-side stage was surrounded by people of all ages enjoying the wonderful variety of performers.

Arun Dias Bandaranaike had the privileged job of announcing the acts throughout the day and he commented that he was “so inspired by the enjoyment youngsters were showing from this alien music”.

His words were so accurate. There was a light-hearted atmosphere throughout the day as families and groups of friends, relaxed on the picnic blankets and swayed to the strains of authentic jazz.

Throughout the day and into the evening, the audience was treated to an incredible line-up of Jazz and Blues artistes. From Jerome Speldewinde’s classic big swing Jazz, to award winning country jazz singer Michael Roach, there was something there for everyone.

The audience was introduced to some talented international musicians, such as America’s jazz legend Jimmy Thomas, as well as some groovy South African artists: Sannie Fox, Duduzile Makhoba and Musa Mashiane.

A highlight was young South African singer Andaya Jiya who had the crowd captivated with her unique jazz style that included a twist of gospel and RnB. Her effortless stage presence and her love for performing were greeted by enthusiastic crowd interaction.

She was accompanied by the awesome band, The Untouchables. Her set, towards the beginning of the evening, set the tone for the rest of the night’s performers.

Music may have been the main attraction of the day but there was also an extravagant array of food and drink, anything from oysters and champagne to delicious picnic hampers filled with wine, cheeses and cold meats.

In another area the pop-up Colombo Design Market had set up shop and there was a wide selection of vendors. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday.
