Two vie for BASL Secretary post

With the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) election for the key post of Secretary coming up next month, Eraj de Silva is to contest for the post along with Amal Randeniya who announced his candidature earlier. Mr. de Silva has been a member of the Executive Committee of the BASL for the past three years, having been elected to the Ex Co with the highest number of votes for the period 2015/16.

He has been an active member of the BASL for over 10 years. In 2006, he served as Chairman of the Junior National Law Conference and as Convenor of the Junior Bar during the period 2008/09 -2009/10. He has organised forums, conferences, workshops and seminars for the BASL and initiatives, including reconciliation related projects in the North and East, and the first ever Junior Bar Forum.

He is currently the Co-Editor-in-Chief of the BASL Law Journal and practises in the original and appellate courts, including the Commercial High Court, the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, and appears in many parts of the country. Mr de Silva’s name was proposed and seconded by the following President’s Counsel and senior Attorneys-at-Law: M.K. Kanag-Isvaran P.C., Mr Faisz Musthapha P.C., Mr Gamini S. Marapana P.C., Mr Upul Jayasuriya, Mr W. Dayaratne P.C., Mr Kandiah Neelakandan, Mr Prasanna Jayawardene P.C., Mr Uditha Egalahewa P.C., Mr Mahinda Lokuge, Mr Sanjaya Gamage, Ms Nalani Manatunga and Ms Padma Bandara.

Mr Randeniya is a former president of the Colombo Law Society and organised the National Law Week in 2015. He was president of the National Law Conference in 2014. He was an Executive Committee member of the BASL and Convenor of the Junior Bar Committee in 2001, 2004 and 2012, and president of the Junior Law Conference in 2002.
