The children living on the banks of the Wellawatte and Dehiwela canals enjoyed some rare moments of joy presenting their end of year concert at the S. de S. Jayasinghe Hall, Dehiwala last week. The concert was organised by the Shanti organisation which runs five preschools for children in the slum areas.

“It was wonderful to see the little fellows performing on stage..their parents were thrilled and so were we, since there is never an opportunity for the poor kids to get on stage,” said one of the volunteers present. In November the centre held an exhibition of the childrens’ creative work too.

The Shanti Community Animation Movement is a voluntary social service organization working with the shanty-folk living on the banks of the Wellawatte and Dehiwela canals. They provide preschool education and nutrition- free of charge to the children. See their blog at http://shantisj1.wordpress.com

An exhibition by the children was held in November
