Well known cellist Dushyanthi Perera will be the soloist in Edouard Lalo’s Cello concerto in D minor at the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka’s (SOSL) concert, on November 6 at the Ladies’ College Hall at 7 p.m. Conducted by Dr. Ajit Abeysekera, the concert also features Schubert’s 5th symphony, and Offenbach’s overture to Orpheus in the Underworld.

Dushy has garnered recognition of late as a conductor, but it is as the gifted cellist Colombo audiences knew her as before she took up the baton, that she will appear in this concert.

She has appeared as soloist with the SOSL on numerous occasions, and has performed almost all the major concerti in the repertoire—Boccherini, Haydn (D major),Elgar, Dvorak, Lalo, Victor Herbert, Kabalevsky, Brahms double concerto (with Ananda Dabare) and Beethoven’s triple concerto.

The Lalo cello concerto, Dushy says, “is a composition with a blend of strength and fancy, with highly effective writing for the instrument in the Spanish idiom.

Lalo himself wrote this concerning the writing of concerti:”…When a soloist is set on stage he must be given the main role and not be treated as a soloist within the orchestra.”

Lalo’s cello concerto reflects this notion that the soloist ought to truly be a soloist and this is a challenge. Apart from a couple of brief moments for the Orchestra, the cello plays throughout.”

This Romantic Masterworks concert is sponsored by Mohan Tissanayagam. Box plan and tickets are available at the Lionel Wendt Theatre.
