D.S. Senanayake opener T.N. Vidyasekara drives to hit a boundary against Ananda in the first semi-final

The Jaffna Combined Schools team who defeated two top teams – D.S. Senanayake College and Maliyadeva College – on Friday was unfortunate to miss out on a semi-final berth on the fourth day of the 4th Murali Harmony Cup Twenty20 Cricket Tournament held in the North. Despite failing to reach the qualifier the youngsters of Jaffna showed that there is hidden talent in the outstations, especially in the northern region.

Many upsets were recorded in the fourth edition of the much celebrated Twenty20 cricket tournament to be played among 16 first XI boy’s teams and a separate tournament for the girls, contested among eight teams. The Ladies first round matches are 15-overs per-side. There will be no semi-finals for Ladies and the top two teams from the respective groups will play in the final today morning in IODR Oval at Oddusuddan in Mullataivu. St. Peter’s won the first two tournaments while Ananda took the third edition. Shakthi Ladies Anuradhapura won in 2013 and Seenigama Ladies won in 2014. Matches are played at five venues across northern Sri Lanka in the towns of Jaffna, Oddusuddan, Mullativu, Mankulam and Killinochchi.

The tournament a brainchild of legendary bowler Muttiah Muralidaran whose charity the Foundation of Goodness is partnered by Red Dot Tours and Sri Lanka Army in conducting the tournament.
