The fascinating civilization of Egypt
Egypt was a fascinating and powerful civilization ruled by numerous kings known as pharaohs. The Nile River which is the longest river on earth is also situated in Egypt. It provided water and was also important for transport as it was a highway for the Egyptians. The kings who were known as pharaohs in Egypt were powerful rulers. The name pharaoh in Egypt means ‘great house’. Ordinary people believed they were gods.

One of the most beautiful monuments of Egypt are the pyramids. The pyramids in the Giza town that were built for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure are  4500 years old. The biggest was built for the Pharaoh Khufu.

Egyptians exchanged goods such as gold, a kind of paper called papyrus and cattle for trade. The Egyptian society could be shown in a pyramid shape. At the top the pharaoh sits, next are the important governors called viziers and priests. Then come the scribes and noblemen. After them come the craft workers and dancers. Last of all are the farmers and peasant workers.
The Egyptian civilization discovered many things such as the calendar and it was one of the most developed ancient civilizations in the world.

My hobbies
One of my hobbies is reading.
Of course I don’t like to read all kinds of books. For instance I don’t much like fairytales. I like books of mystery and adventure! I also like stories about lively, naughty children, Not goody, goody, prim and proper ones! I like some magical storybooks like ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ and the ‘Enchanted Wood’.

I don’t have money for all the books I want, so I borrow them from the library. Sometimes I go to the library in the morning to read for about 20 minutes before school starts. Whenever I read books, I feel as if I am exploring, adventuring and doing the naughty things that the children in the book seem to do. It is nice to feel like that when I am most of the time at home. It’s because of this that I like books so much.

My other hobby is writing stories. I do not publish them but sometimes when I write short stories I give them to my favourite teacher and the other I keep just for the pleasure of reading them over and over again. Some of the stories I have written are, ‘Miriyam’, ‘Good Friends’, ‘Friends Forever’, ‘Anne’s Birthday Party’, ‘Meebeedeep, the chariot race’ etc.
Of my two hobbies I prefer reading because when I write, my hand gets tired and when I read I gain lots of knowledge and pleasure.

World Children’s Day
The future of our world is the children. Every year on October 1, there is a definite day to celebrate Children’s Day. After the month of August, children look forward to October. Children’s Day is the day which expresses the feelings of the children. In October, every school principal and staff organize trips, and give time for children to play. Children also play and celebrate this day happily. In my school, our principal gave us presents.

Similar to Sri Lanka, other countries all celebrate this day happily. Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Teachers’ Day are all important days celebrated in the year.  Children’s Day is an unforgettable day for children. Like Children’s Day, all should celebrate the other days.

Why I want to be a scientist

There are people in the world who do different types of jobs for their living. Farmers grow crops for the people in their area. Teachers teach students in their area. But scientists are very special, as they serve all the people in the whole world.
Galileo Galilei invented the telescope. It is a useful equipment for all. Thomas Alva Edison invented the electric bulb. It is used by all the people in the world. Isaac Newton invented the theory of gravitation. That is helpful for all of us. That is why I want to be a scientist, because I want to serve the whole world.
To be a scientist, I have to
work hard. I should think innovatively. I read books of Science. I like to do experiments. Then I can reach my dream.
One day I will be a scientist and serve all the people in my planet.

My trip to Sinharaja
We got ready early in the morning and started our trip to Sinharaja Rainforest. It was a long journey to Sinharaja from Galle. On the way, we visited Duvili Falls. We reached the hotel in Lankagama and took lunch from there.
In the evening,
we had a bath in the
Gin River. It was fun and the water was cool. When we came out of the river, it was dark.
We went to the rooms, had dinner and slept.
We woke up early the next day. We got boarded into a small lorry and went to see the white monkeys. They swung from tree to tree. We took some photographs of them.
Next, we went to see the Kakuna Falls. There were a lot of fish. The water was fresh. We had a nice dip in the natural pool.
We went through the Sinharaja Rainforest with our guide. It was an adventurous walk. I enjoyed it a lot. We saw a few more waterfalls. They were very beautiful. We also saw the beautiful flora and fauna of Sinharaja.
After the tiring walk, we had lunch and came back home. I will never forget this trip.
