Park Street Mews is Nilanka Silva’s canvas this evening. Celebrating the diversely beautiful human body, the creator of the brand La’Sari will showcase her vibrantly coloured pieces today.

Some uncertainty has however been hovering around her brand. “People think I make only sarees,” she says of the unfortunate tangle which springs from the name of her brand. ‘La’Sari’ is in fact a “Pali-Sanskrit” word translating to mean ‘a thing of beauty’ she shares.

Graduating in 1995 with a degree in fashion from the Institute of Fashion Design, she went on a break, she says. Returning to her passion around five years ago, diversity has been the essence of the brand and Nilanka has five segments lined-up to show for it.

Neutral collections of cotton and beralu, Classic combinations of black and white and a collection presenting a carnival of colours are all a part of the show.

Going with a tag-line of “Individuality Celebrated” the designer’s attention to positive body image is the evening’s underlying theme.

“No-one is the same” she feels, and all body-types be it “curvy, narrow-hipped, broad hipped or small” are represented in her work. Each of this evening’s segments are to “have pieces everyone can feel beautiful in.”
