The Royal Asiatic Society Sri Lanka’s (RASSL) monthly public lecture this August will be on “Sri Lankan Buddha Image: Re-examining the History and Artistic Elements” . It will be delivered by Dr. (Mrs.) Prashanthi Narangoda, on Monday, August 31 at 5 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7. The lecture is open to all.

The common assumption of the beginning of Sri Lankan socio-cultural implications and the artistic developments is that Buddhism arrived in the country from India and hence the Indian influences on Sri Lankan culture, society, and art and architecture from the 3rd century BCE.

The country has passed through millennia after the introduction of such traditions. Dr. Narangoda who is Head/Senior Lecturer -Visual Arts & Design and Performing Arts Unit, Department of Fine Arts, University of Kelaniya will re-examine the historical and artistic elements of the Sri Lankan Buddha image as a significant specimen, as revealed in both literature, and iconography to establish a new understanding.
