Sri Lanka Cricket is making plans to meet its stakeholders on August 18 in a bid to explain about the restructuring of the local tournaments so that they could bridge the gap between the domestic standards and the international requirements.

SLC Interim Committee Chairman Sidath Wettimuny told the Sunday Times “We are hoping to meet all stakeholders on August 18 and explain the proposed restructuring programme. This will be the first of many such congregations where we are hoping to exchange views on how to develop the game within our precincts.”

Last week the Sunday times revealed that from next year the Provincial Cricket Tournament will be replaced by a club based Zonal Cricket Tournament . The structure of the tournament was explained by SLC Head of Cricket Operations Carlton Bernadus in the following manner “At the end of the Premier League Club tournament, SLC’s Tournament Committee would cluster the Premier League teams into five groups on performance so there would be uniformity in strength among the competitors.

There are fourteen Premier League Clubs. So to make it fifteen teams in the tournament in all probabilities the winners of the emerging tournament would also be a part of one of the Zones. This means there would be three teams pitted into each Zone giving each zone a choice of 60 players (20 from each club) which would give each zone ample choice to select its squad with good bench strength.”

Another significant change would be the introduction of a second division tournament from the fourteen Premier League Clubs – to be played simultaneously during the peak season. - SRP
