President Maithripala Sirisena visited the Central Bank last Thursday and was welcomed by Governor Arjuna Mahendran, just a week before the country’s leader said he had advised that Mahendran should step down over the controversy involved in the Treasury Bonds scandal.

On Wednesday, President Sirisena told reporters that he had advised Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe that to retain the latter’s honesty (and image) that Mr. Mahendran should step down over the controversy.

A Central Bank media release on Wednesday said that a new silver coin minted for the 150th Birth Anniversary of Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala was presented as a memento to the President to mark his visit to the Bank. He was accompanied by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.
