Dr. C.G. Uragoda, the prolific writer, who has contributed literary works on varied subjects, such as A History of Medicine, A Bibliography of Health, Traditions, Wildlife Conservation, Camping and Jungle Trips etc. that are all on Sri Lanka, and his autobiography, Sri Lanka, then and now recently launched the third volume in his series, Authors of Books on Sri Lanka.

The latest volume covers the period 1976 to 1990 and considers 227 authors.

Dr. Uragoda’s three volumes on the series cover the periods 1796 to 1948, 1949 to 1975 and 1976 to 1990. Each volume is a companion to the later one as it carries an update on each author’s subsequent publications and literary contributions. Further, many new authors not included in volumes 1 and 2 are mentioned in the third volume now published.

The series of these three volumes are a scholarly account. Volume 1 published in 2011 covers the British period when books that are now somewhat rare were introduced. Volumes 2 and 3 were published in 2014 and 2015 respectively, and these dealt with the post-independence era. The author has made important observations that establish a historic record to guide future researchers. It is encouraging that the author has not only described the idyllic, but also highlighted the unique and salient events.

The much researched publications written in a lucid and concise manner provide not only a short account of each book published, but also carry a biographic pen sketch and insight to its authors. Further, many unknown or little known anecdotes of the authors as narrated make interesting reading. The authors are arranged in alphabetical order that makes reference easy. The information provided creates in the reader the urge to source the original text.

The books would undoubtedly provide a valuable guide to any researcher and student. Dr. Uragoda’s writings provide a knowledge-base for posterity.
