Science College Mt. Lavinia had to pull all stops to gain a 37-22 win over Kingswood in a Singer Inter-School rugby game at their grounds in Mt. Lavinia yesterday. At the breather Science led 25-17. There was confusion in the colours of the jerseys worn by the two sides as both sides wore red. It was only the sponsors names which differentiated them. The referee asked the home team to change their jerseys but it was of no avail as they were not prepared for it at such short notice.

Science should thank the Maduranga brothers – Thanuja and Tharindu – as they were in the thick of things at all times. Thanuja made the necessary breaks which enabled skipper Karunatilleke, Sajith Walkamage and Nirosh Perera to score the tries in the first half. For the Kingswoodians winger Reza Rifaideen stood out like a beacon with is speed, collection and team work. The only other try for Kingswood was scored by Adeeb Jibran which Rifaideen converted.

There was no doubt that the Science lads would ultimately win as they dominated play in the set pieces and line outs and whenever the Science lads worked the line there was imminent danger that they would score.

Soon after the start Thanuja Maduranga put over a penalty and Science led 3-0. Skipper Lasindu Karunatilleke scored next. It was Kingswood’s chance to score when Riza Rifaideen scored a peach of a try from hooker Sajith Walkamage. Nirosh Perera scored next and very soon Science had run up a 20-3 lead. Rioza Rifaideen scored for Kingswood next, followed by Adeeb Jibran to lead 25-17 at the half way mark.

The second half was all Science with Tharindu Maduranga and Supun Dilshan scoring tries with Tharindu being accurate with his kicks.
